cranksgiving2010It’s coming…

We’re doing it again! And thank GAWD! We have had so much fun at the previous Des Moines Cranksgiving events that we had to bring it back.

You bring a fun attitude and your bike (road, cross, hybrid, or mountain) and we’ll provide you with a map of local stores and a list of 12 items to buy around the Des Moines area (one item per store).

All products purchased for the event will be donated to DMARC and The Pet Project. There will be top prizes, such as a gift certificate to Yankee Doodle Tattoo, as well as a raffle for a new bike! If you have any questions, please email Sara Broek at blondie2950@gmail.com.

We hope to see your happy holiday faces!

Last Days of Summer

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

The last days of summer 2010 are upon us. And although the tomatoes and fresh produce from the spring and summer have been fantastic, we are gearing up for the hearty foods and earthy produce (onion, squash, etc) of the late summer and fall. We’re also enjoying the last stock of summery beers – so stop in after work and grab one before they’re gone.

summersale

Stop in to grab the last stock of New Belgium’s Skinny Dip summer ale or Summit Brewery’s Hefe-Weizen for $3 any time of day.

Breaking The Ice(d Coffee)…

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Hello All,

My name is Sam and I will be your narrator and guide for a little coffee education and cycling discussion here on the Mars Cafe site. I work in a local kitchen and do a little food blog and a cycling blog, but sometimes I really want to branch out and do something different so last week I threw a tweet out on um…Twitter asking if anyone would like me to guest post on their blogs and LJ heeded the call.  We met for lunch along with the Matt S and hammered out this idea:

You see, I am by trade a chef/cook type worker and I have accumulated a pretty large knowledge base in the food-ular and wine-ular areas, but my coffee knowledge is right up there with many line cooks.  In the kitchen, coffee is what gets the day started and keeps you firing on at least most cylinders as the work piles up and orders roll in.  In this arena just about any coffee will do, and I have even seen some of my more out of control co-homies mix their coffee with ENERGY DRINKS in the SAME CUP.  And somehow they are still alive…

So it was decided that I will be learning about the finer points and intricacies of Coffee and Coffee Culture then conveying my experience to you, the tens of readers out there.  Oh, and the biking… the biking…

Mars has some rather rabid cyclists/cycling fans in their employ and coffee customer crowd.  Mars has also hosted Cranksgiving, an “alleycat” race to fight hunger, for three years and recently Jameson um…I mean Graham (so sorry guys, I always seem to mix you up, even in the enchanted land of the Inderwebs) of Mars Cafe organized another benefit Caffeine Crawl.  These guys have some fun and interesting bike stuff coming up and I look forward to bringing you said cycling news.

I might even try to make it funny or entertaining.  hmmm…..

Records and fun with David Bess of Public Property. Come in for a special Scented Vinyl at 7pm, Thursday June 3rd.

“Public Property has a sound that is full-tilt reggae even though they don’t try to sing in fake patois and write original material that actually sounds original. Lots of syncopated rhythm breaks, bursts of pure groove and passionate musical interludes flesh out songs written by various band members…” -The Beat Magazine
